Semester: 1

Course Brief

Design Studio I introduces students to the fundamental principles of graphic design through a sequence of projects focused on visual abstraction, form, typography, identity, and systematic communication.

The course progresses from the simplification of natural forms to the construction of letter-based symbols and, finally, to the development of a complete visual identity. Students learn how positive and negative space, proportion, juxtaposition, grids, typography, and consistency contribute to clear and recognisable visual communication.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Simplify complex subjects into clear and recognisable visual forms.

  • Use positive and negative space as active compositional elements.

  • Explore relationships between shape, proportion, contrast, and visual balance.

  • Analyse and combine letterforms to create typographic symbols.

  • Apply introductory grid systems and typographic principles.

  • Develop a logo and extend it into a coherent visual identity.

  • Create consistent brand applications across printed and digital formats.

  • Present and explain the conceptual and formal decisions behind a design system.

Projects

Project 01

Visual Abstraction

Students select vegetables or animals and produce two visually abstracted representations. Through observation, reduction, and repeated experimentation, they remove unnecessary detail while preserving the subject’s most recognisable characteristics.

The project introduces simplification, silhouette, figure-ground relationships, and the expressive use of negative space. Students examine how far a form can be reduced while remaining visually distinct and meaningful.

Project 02

Monogram

Students design a monogram using the initials of their first and last names. They investigate the structural characteristics of letterforms and explore how two characters can be combined into a unified visual symbol.

The project develops students’ understanding of typography through visual abstraction, proportion, overlap, juxtaposition, and negative space. Rather than placing two letters beside one another, students are expected to construct a coherent form in which both initials contribute to a single identity.

Project 03

Logo and Corporate Identity

Students imagine a fictional company, organisation, or initiative and develop a complete visual identity for it. Beginning with research and concept development, they design a logo and establish the visual principles that define the identity.

The project introduces fundamental graphic design concepts, including logo construction, grid systems, typography, colour, hierarchy, and brand consistency. Students extend the identity across a range of printed and digital applications, ensuring that every element belongs to the same visual system.

The final identity includes a business card, letterhead, app splash screen, app icon, and at least two custom product or service applications developed specifically for the imagined brand.
